What is a Hardwood “Screen & Recoat”?
In our restoration process, we carefully remove a thin layer of polyurethane that protects your hardwood from stains and scratches. Through screening, our skilled floor restoration experts skillfully prepare the surface for the next step. We then apply a fresh coat of our patented Granny’s Elixir over the abraded coating, leaving your floors with a renewed and protected finish. Say goodbye to blemishes and hello to floors that radiate with beauty and resilience!
Please note that hardwood screening has its limitations, and it may not be suitable for certain situations. For instance, deep scratches or significant color changes cannot be addressed through screening. If your hardwood floor has stains, pet urine, or scratches that have penetrated down to the raw wood, the screening process will not be able to fix or improve these issues. If this is the case, you most likely need a sanding and reapplication of the polyurethane.
Instances when hardwood screening may not work:
Waxed floors: Screening won’t adhere properly to waxed surfaces, so it’s not suitable for such floors. Additionally, floors treated with products containing wax, like Mop & Glo or Orange Glo, are not suitable for screening.
Worn-down floors: If your floors have worn past the color, or you notice gray patches from oxidation, screening is not the right solution. In such cases, a full sanding and refinishing process is required.
Color change: If you wish to change the color of your floors, you’ll need to sand them down to the raw hardwood and apply the desired stain.
Gray patches: Screening cannot address UV discoloration under area rugs.
The process of hardwood screening is less intensive than sanding and refinishing. It involves scuffing up the floor using a buffer embedded with abrasive particles, which ensures proper bonding for the new coat of Granny’s Elixir. This process is relatively quicker and thus less expensive.
The screening process usually takes one day, with 10-20 minutes between each coat. All furniture must be moved, and there is virtually no huge drying time.
